5 ways to wear: a pencil skirt

A pencil skirt is one of the most versatile, feminine article of clothing in your closet. It shows off curves beautifully, can be dressed up and dressed down depending on the occasion. To prove this point, here are 5 options for how to wear. You'll notice I chose a pencil skirt for each outfit from The Limited because I think they are the most flattering and reliable in fit I've found so far.

1. Dress down with your favorite graphic tee. Then, add classic leopard pumps to keep the look feminine with an edge. Be sure to keep jewelry extremely simple and understated so as not to compete.

2. Add contracts by layering a lacy blouse under a bulky sweater vest. Pick one bright color and keep the rest of the outfit neutral to draw focus to your best feature. Then, make sure the vest is a button up, leaving all unbuttoned so you can see the lacy details in the blouse underneath. Pair with some stellar suede booties that compliment the sweater vest to pull the entire look together.

3. Take a risk by pairing a cropped sweatshirt with the look. I've been really into modest cropped tops these days, leaving the tiniest bit of skin showing between the two separates. Pair with classic nude heels to lengthen legs and draw the eye up. Then, keep the look simple by skipping the accessories and opting for natural makeup and hair. Remember: Keep it classy, ladies. If you can see belly button, you've taken the crop too far.

4. Mix floral with polka dots for an ultra feminine outfit. The key to mixing patterns is keeping the simpler pattern (polka dots) smaller in size and the busier one (floral) large and bold. For a modern look, choose a blouse with a floral pattern that's a little abstract and includes some sharp edges. Then, bring out your inner sauciness and find some fierce pumps that show you are a force to be reckoned with.

5. Stay classic with a black and white top and tan slouchy booties. Pair with a brighter, unconventional colored pencil skirt and add a just-as-bold bracelet and lip color to finish the look.

tip: Always, always, always tuck your top into your pencil skirt (unless cropped). The primary reason for wearing a pencil skirt is to show off your waist and curves. So, to get the most out of the slinky, high waisted number, never ever let your blouse hide the top of the skirt.
